Gum Grafting
When gums recede, the root of the tooth is exposed. That can bring sensitivity, make teeth look longer and leave roots more open to decay. Around implants, thin gum can make cleaning harder. A gum graft adds tissue where it’s needed.
Types of gum graft
| Graft | What’s involved |
|---|---|
| Connective tissue graft | Tissue from under the surface of the palate, placed over the exposed root |
| Free gingival graft | A thin layer from the palate, used to thicken gum |
| Donor or collagen matrix | Processed tissue instead of your own, so the palate isn’t involved |
Who it suits
Gum grafting may help if you have receding gums, sensitive exposed roots, thin gum around an implant or crown, or recession that is getting worse over time. We’ll look at the cause too – often brushing too hard, grinding or gum disease – so it doesn’t keep happening.
Your treatment, step by step
- Assessment – we measure the recession and check gum health.
- Graft – placed under local anaesthetic, in a single visit.
- Healing – the graft site settles over two to four weeks. If tissue is taken from the palate, it’s usually tender for a week or two.
- Review – we check how the graft has taken and how your gums are healing.
Cost
Gum grafting is quoted after your assessment, based on the number of teeth and type of graft.

No. Gum disease is treated first with cleaning and care. Grafting repairs recession once the gums are healthy. See our gum disease page.
