Dentures

Dentures are a great solution for anyone who wishes to replace multiple missing teeth in a swift and cost-effective way. They can be made out of either acrylic or chrome cobalt, and are a wonderful alternative to other options such as dental bridges and implants.

Full/Complete Dentures

Full dentures are made for patients who are missing all their teeth in one, or both arches of their mouth. Upper dentures are often a great solution for patients who are missing their top teeth, as there is often enough dental bone in the maxilla to hold in a denture, and to provide great suction. Lower dentures, however, can be a little unreliable in retention, as there is often an inadequate amount of suitable bone in the mandibular arch to hold in a denture well. Despite most situations being relatively simple, there are sometimes complex situations which will require either an experienced prosthesist, or most likely a prosthodontist (specialist) to help you create a wonderful fitting denture.

Chrome Partial Dentures

Chrome partial dentures are a wonderful solution for patients who are missing only a few, but not all their teeth. They are made of a combination of chromium cobalt and acrylic, and are much stronger, thinner and more comfortable than acrylic-only dentures. Because of the strength of chromium cobalt, they can also last a very long time (many years to decades), if maintained well. The only drawbacks that chrome partial dentures might have are the unaesthetic appearance of clasps (small hooks) that are used to retain the denture on the other remaining teeth, as well as the general maintenance requirements of wearing dentures. We often recommend you to consider dental bridges and/or implants if dentures are not suitable for you, and our dentists at On Track Dental will be more than happy to help discuss which options suit you best.

Acrylic Partial Dentures

Acrylic dentures are a cheap option for patients missing many teeth, however they are weak and not as comfortable as other alternatives. Despite their advantage that they are easy to repair, often it is because they are weak that they need repairing in the first place. Acrylic dentures can be a great temporary options whilst patients transition to a chrome partial denture, dental bridge, or dental implants.

Immediate Dentures (Chrome or Acrylic)

Immediate Dentures
(Chrome or Acrylic)

Immediate dentures are simply dentures that are made before your teeth are extracted, so that they can be inserted and issued to you on the same day the dentist removes your teeth. The reason behind immediate dentures is so you don’t go a day without your smile. Immediate dentures will cover the extraction socket straight away, also acting like a band-aid to help the healing process.

The main issue with immediate dentures is that they will very quickly become loose as the extraction sockets in your mouth heal after the teeth are removed. This is because the gums are healing reshaping, meaning the denture will not fit as snug as it did the first day. However, to rectify this, a ‘denture reline’ can be done approximately 12-16 weeks after your teeth are removed, in order to refit the denture and allow it to be strong and retentive again. During these 12-16 weeks, you can use denture adhesive to hold it in so you can function well without worrying that your denture will become loose.

Our dentists at On Track Dental will be more than happy to help discuss immediate dentures with you if this is something that you might be interested in.
