Bone Grafting for Dental Implants
Once a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that spot slowly shrinks. An implant needs enough bone around it to be stable, so if the bone has thinned, a graft can rebuild it first – or at the same time as the implant.
Types of bone graft
| Graft | When it’s used |
|---|---|
| Socket preservation | At the time of an extraction, to limit bone loss while the site heals |
| Ridge augmentation | Where the jaw has narrowed or flattened after a long-standing gap |
| Sinus lift | For upper back teeth, where the sinus sits close to the jaw and there’s little bone height |
Who may need a graft
You may need a graft if a tooth has been missing for a long time, you’ve had gum disease, you’ve worn a denture for years, or the implant site is in the upper back jaw near the sinus. Your 3D scan shows us exactly how much bone you have.
Your treatment, step by step
- 3D scan – we measure the bone at the implant site.
- Graft – placed under local anaesthetic, sometimes at the same visit as the implant.
- Healing – usually three to nine months, depending on the type and size of graft.
- Implant – placed once the graft has matured, if it wasn’t placed at the same time.
Cost
Bone grafting is quoted after your scan, as it depends on the type and amount of graft needed. It’s shown as a separate item on your implant quote.

Frequently asked questions
